to harry reid, the house has tried to fix sequestration in the past. we've done nothing in the senate. it's one thing to be the world's most deliberative body. it's another thing to be just absent. we've been the most absent bodyy the nistry -- in the history of modern pod ticks. we're not doing anything in the senate so, harry, please take the president's proposal or come up with one of your own, put it on the floor and let's start voting. if you don't like what we're doing, come up with your own. now, as john will say, a little straight talk. we have our feeling on this proposal. on this sequestration idea. it was the president's idea, according to bob woodward's book, but we as the republican party agreed to. we got in this mess together and we're going to have to get out together. mr. president, help lead us and unlike anyone else on this stage, you are the commander in chief. do you really want your legacy to be at a time of great conflict, you led the american congress into a deal that would destroy the military at a time we needed it the most? y

on abc over the weekend, harry reid pointedly would not commit to supporting an assault weapons ban. >> i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it didn't make sense but i'll take a look at it. i think everyone acknowledges we should do some background checks. >> reid said the senate would move the bill through the judiciary committee, it's unlikely to include a gun ban. though reid has said california senator dianne feinstein will have an opportunity to present the provision as an amendment once the bill reaches the senate floor. remember there's a whole bunch of red tape democrats want to actively cascade a vote against the assault weapons ban so they can show they are pro-gun. >> the super bowl ad new york city mayor's group ran in the d.c. market focused on one part of the gun control bills and that's the background check, one pointing out the nra at one time supported closing the gun show loophole. >> we think it's reasonable to provide mandatory, instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show, no loopholes anywhere for anyone. >> 14 years lat

harry reid filed cloture vote on democratic plan to replace sequester. this is the plan that came out of committee. it has not been voted on, on the floor. this means they need 60 votes to move past that hurdle to get a simple majority. to vote on the democratic plan. he is allowing the republicans to move forward with their plan, which is the inhof-toomey, one of the options they will move forward. they have to get 60 vote threshold. that will all come together tomorrow. >> well, i am told by both side they don't think the bill will pass. >> bret: 60 votes. >> so it is not going to be -- it helps, because both sides need to place blame in advance of the equester -- sequester coming online. both sides are complicit. but president obama if there is any economic slide president obama will be accountable for. that he can blame republicans all he wants but if we start to feel something in mid-april that is going to be tough for the president as tough as it will be for the republicans. at this point the best they can do is hop something happens in march where

it will be tough for harry reid and the senate's. these are issues that will come over here at some point. don't you think it will hold up the process if he is having trouble on these issues? >> the process was designed to be inefficient and difficult so that, if congress were able to move a bill through both houses, they could agree upon a bill, it would actually become law. and so, at the start of every session, there is always a number of issues that carry from the prior session. frankly, there's a lot of scar tissue that carries over with a lot of these bills. it is up to congress to figure out where the common ground is. and how to deal with it. >> what does this mean for your party politically if the sequestered goes through? >> let me make clear, i don't like the sequester. ax. -- i think it will be like taking a meat ax to our government. the president did not want to have to deal with the debt limit again before his reelection. it was the president and senate democrats committed with us to get an outcome from the super commi
